In the conceptual age, your source of competitive advantage is no longer finding more information; it is making sense of the overwhelming volume of information already available to you.

The quote above is from the book “Strategic Learning: How to be Smarter Than Your Competitors and Turn Key Insights Into Competitive Advantage” by Willie Pietersen, former head of Columbia University Business School.

What does this quote mean?

As technology evolves, information is needed and expected at a much faster pace.

To remain competitive, it is essential for businesses to access tangible information at the click of a button.

How easily and quickly can your business retrieve meaningful business information? What tools are you using to achieve this goal?

As we all know, ERP systems are great for storing and organizing data. But, today’s business user requires much more. It is essential to access critical information at a rapid pace. This requirement has forced many businesses to purchase additional tools to make sense of their ERP data.

What are the benefits of these tools, and how do you choose the right solution?

We did the analysis and will share it with viewers who want to learn the comparisons of:

Ad-Hoc Reporting Tools

Oracle Reporting Products

Spreadsheet Plug-ins

And more…

In V9.1 Oracle finally has delivered a reporting tool designed for end-users. If your users need simple, transactional reporting, this tool might be a nice addition to your JDE system. Check out this complimentary online webinar to learn how to satisfy your more complex and financial reporting needs.

Today’s market is rapidly changing. Stay Competitive. Stay Informed.

If you ask Hayley Parris, Accountant at Burns and McDonnell, she will tell you that they share two very important traits.

Here is what she told us in a recent conversation at InVision 2012, InsightSoftware.com’s User Group.

First Hayley says, “Goats can take in almost anything and turn it into something useful. That’s what Insight does for us.” Whew. Now I can let go of my breath.

Next Hayley adds that,

“Goats can climb anything. And with Insight, we have been able to reach heights in our financial reporting that we had never thought possible.”

Thanks Hayley. I was a bit worried initially.

We also spoke with Steve Woodward, Oracle Financial Business Analyst at Burns & McDonnell, who discovered Insight at an Oracle Applications User Group in 2007. He was on a mission to find a product that would drill into subledgers. He narrowed his selection to three vendors and says,

“Ultimately, Insight was the only product that could prove to us that they could drill into subledgers the way we wanted.”

When asked how Insight Reporting for Oracle Financials in the E-Business Suite has helped them provide more value to the business, Steve states,

“What used to take us 8 hours now takes less than a minute. Accounting can now do things that are a whole lot more important than trying to run a report!”

Hayley added,

“I would seriously rethink my employment if I didn’t have Insight Reporting for Oracle Financials.”

Stay tuned! We are in the process of updating their story.

At InsightSoftware.com, we demonstrate our genuine fondness and respect for each other every day.

One of the many ways we do that is to support each other when there is a professional or personal issue. So when one of our colleague’s father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, we jumped into action.

In true InsightSoftware.com style, we are joining together to raise funding for pancreatic cancer research by participating in the PurpleStride Denver 5K Run/Walk. This event is organized by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, also known as PANCAN, to help support the fight against pancreatic cancer.

The event takes place on June 24, and our goal is to raise at least $1500. If you are interested in supporting pancreatic cancer research, please visit our team web page.

In a recent post on LinkedIn, there was a question about why most companies are stuck in first gear and can’t maximize their JD Edwards investment.

It’s a common complaint. ERP systems are not designed to be easy. They are designed to solve an incredibly complex problem, and they do it in a complex way. Since this doesn’t serve the end users well, they continue to find ways around the system.

But, as one Insight Reporting customer noted in his response to this LinkedIn discussion, it doesn’t have to be that hard.

“It’s really very simple, ERP projects fail because they don’t improve business processes,” says Derek Olorenshaw, Manager of Business Systems, ITS at the District of North Vancouver.

Derek has done exactly that at District of North Vancouver – he focused on improving business processes. Derek recently shared their highly successful implementation with us and discussed how they:

increased efficiency in analyzing data

empowered various levels in the organization

opened the opportunity for sharing information thru self-serve

simplified the process of reporting

Watch the recorded webinar as they also demonstrate their usage of reporting solutions for various aspects of the operations such as in budgeting, project management, accounting, reporting, and employee management.

In Derek’s experience, it doesn’t matter how big, how diversified or how knowledgeable a project teams is. Making business process improvement the one and only focus of the implementation is the only way to avoid a failed ERP implementation.

“Bottom line – if you want a successful ERP project, get out from behind the “Project Management” smoke and mirrors, focus on improving business processes and deliver a system that is a NET EXPORTER of information to the end user.”

We want to hear your comments and experiences! Tell us what you have done to improve your JDE performance.

It’s audit season, so I am doing some research on how people are addressing the differences between the Inventory Cardex (F4111) and the GL transaction table (F0911). As an accountant, I’ve seen many different workarounds, and I’m curious how people are doing this to avoid audit issues.

How do you manage this? Do you create Excel data dumps of each table, using pivot tables to match up the differences manually? Do you have a more efficient way of solving this problem?

So far, my research indicates that most financial professionals have created some sort of manual, time consuming process outside of their ERP system, which never really leads to resolving the root cause.

Check out our new webinar on creating lead audit schedules in a snap. Make your auditors happy and your life easier!

Please let me know your experiences – and I’ll post the results as I continue to dig into this.

by Tracey Bishop and Glenn Wirrick

A study of the headlines of business and finance journals at the New Year reveals wide usage of terms such as “Eurozone collapse”, “Uncertainty” and, “Avoiding Risk”. Many finance directors are heading into the New Year with a focus on cutting costs and increasing cash flow to strengthen balance sheets and avoid risk.

As the global economic storms continue to rage in 2012, finance directors and their teams will be presented with a new level of challenge. However, those challenges could also be stimulating and allow finance professionals to bring all their skills to bear to help their businesses survive.

Undoubtedly, finance teams will need to move away from just “keeping score” and offer the business better insight into how to cut costs and stay competitive. Here are three ways to help you survive in 2012:

1) Accurately analyse your spend and revenue – Even finance directors of long standing businesses now need to unearth their entreprenurial spirit and look at new, creative ways to cut costs and offer ideas for revenue generation. Every stone should be turned to look at new ways to improve the margins — and this means looking at your financial information from new angles.

Maintain a holistic view of the organisation’s financial performance so ideas for new growth as well as cost reduction can quickly be spotted and offered to the management team.

Compare departments side by side to get new insights into spend and revenue.

Be prepared to advise management on the most profitable and saleable products so marketing and sales can be directed accordingly.

Examine recent acquisitions for hidden costs or cost saving practices, which could be rolled out across the company.

Keep a close eye on departments that have less control over their budgets. This is not the year for surprises.

2) Monitor your Payables activity – Are you getting the most value from your providers? An early spring clean of the payables function will allow you to review payment terms, discounts, and controls.

Make sure you know which suppliers have favourable payment terms and make sure they are justified by better prices or contract terms.

Identify any areas where available discounts are not taken. Again, if your procurement team have taken the trouble to negotiate these they should have a significant value to the business and every discount lost will require more sales to compensate.

Make sure your payables controls are working effectively. Payables can be a high-risk area in terms of fraud, but overbearing controls can slow the process and impact cash flow by imposing too much manual intervention and placing too many invoices on hold. Run regular checks to see how many invoices are on hold, how long invoices are taking to process and to monitor the efficiency of your payment runs.

De-clutter your supplier files. Those unassuming supplier records set up over time for specific purchases can result in all sorts of temptations for contract leakage and additional purchase costs. Keep your supplier records to a minimum to avoid unnecessary costs.

3) Improve cash management – Often, 80% of your biggest potential cash improvements are available from your top 20% of customers.

Make sure you can easily identify your best and worst customers in terms of spend and payment compliance.

Monitor Days Sales Outstanding (DSO), adherence to credit terms, and late pays. Improving overall DSO by even two to three days can deliver dramatic cash flow improvements.

Check your Receivables processes regularly to identify bottlenecks which can affect cash flow. For example, disputed invoice resolution, too much use of credit memos, etc.

Here is some interesting research on this topic:
